Thanks A-Latte!

Andrew and I are absolute coffee fiends. Our french press broke a few months ago so we've practically been living at one of our local coffee shops. Obviously our little $7/day habit has been adding up and it's become unnecessary. Solution time! Lots of people on this here internet have been passing around a recipe for cold-brewed coffee and it looked delicious.

Not so much according to this photo.

Even made my own simple syrup to get rid of the whole sugar-not-dissolving-in-cold-beverage thing and let me tell you, it is absolute...

B-L-I-S-S

It is so delicious with soy milk. Dare I say too delicious?? The coffee concentrate is 1lb of coarse ground Metropolis Coffee's El Salvador Finca La Fany plus one gallon of cold water, steeped and chilled in the fridge for 24 hours. Depending on how dark you like your coffee, I'd advise you to adjust the coffee/water ratio. I also need you to check out our new über expensive and modern beverage dispenser:

Proceed with caution because you can't just sip it, guys. YOU HAVE TO CHUG IT.

  1. yes! I make mine with Cafe Bustelo (or, to be prefectly honest, even regular old Maxwell House works also) and it is so very delicious. I love coffee in general, but this cold brewed stuff makes the most amazing iced coffee drinks I have ever tasted.

  2. I totally agree with you, it's the yummiest! I actually wanted to use Bustelo but Andrew was not having it. Whenever my mom visits she brings instant Bustelo so it's triggering for him or something??

  3. I love ice brewed coffee. I had it for the first time in Austin three years ago and thought the whole brewing process nutty. But oh no, it's delicious.

I'm living in London where they still think an iced coffee is a cup of hot coffee poured over ice. Oy. So gross. I've taken to drinking my cuppa at home, for the summer at least. Hopefully the London coffee shops with get hip to this brewing process. They need it!

  4. I'll have to try that. Is that cheesecloth you are straining it with?

  6. I cut way, way back on coffee some months ago because it messes with my anxiety levels, and mostly I do ok with not missing it. But your pictures above are absolute TORTURE and now I really, really want a decent iced-coffee! GAH!

  7. @Melizza: How barbaric!! At least doing it yourself, in this case, is super easy :)

@Kimberly: I completely forgot to mention that part, sorry! I folded over cheesecloth four times and placed that on a mesh strainer. Folding it over more will definitely help avoid a slightly dirty or gritty taste :)

@Thick Threads: I'm glad you liked it, you're totally going to love it when you make it. PROMISE.

@Kath: ;( Coffee is da bes and now I'm sad for you. Make a baby batch and spread it out over a couple weeks or something, maybe?

  8. Too tempting I am afraid. I have my one cup of coffee each work day and the occasional social cup - anything more is a slippery slope back to being a full coffeeholic!

  9. I had honestly not heard of cold brewed coffee until I read this! I made some in a french press and it turned out so well! (the only downside being that you can only make three cups at a time) It's so much better than hot brewed coffee with ice cubes, and my parent's have me making it every night so we can have iced coffee for breakfast. :)

  10. Cold brewing was totally new to me too! I just made my second batch over the weekend and it's even better the second time around. The flavor is just so much better than hot brew.

  11. SO GOOD! Toddy (Toddy:cold-brew coffee :: Kleenex:facial tissue) is usually an option in our coffee shops, so it's been a while since I've made any! This makes me want to again for sure! NOW.

I am a black/unsweetened coffee snob and always trying to convert people, but you should try not sweetening it. The brewing process makes it naturally sweeter & more smooth than hot-brewed.
